Video insights

@hiphopofthe90s's TikTok video "Redman brought pure Jersey energy to a West Coast classic 💯 Redman released “SHIZNIT” in November 2024 as part of his “J@q Boi Be@tz Freestyle” series. The series features Redman delivering new performances over recognizable instrumentals from different artists and eras. For this entry, he selected the beat from Snoop Dogg’s “Tha Shiznit.” The original song appeared on Snoop’s debut album on November 23, 1993, with production handled by Dr. Dre. Its laid-back rhythm, synthesizer melody and heavy bass made it a recognizable part of the G-funk sound associated with their early work together. Instead of recreating Snoop’s original approach, Redman brings his own delivery to the instrumental. He changes pace throughout the performance, moves between shorter and longer phrases and uses the open spaces in Dr. Dre’s production differently. It shows how the same beat can produce a completely different result depending on a rapper’s timing and personality. The selection also connects two distinct parts of early ’90s hip-hop. Redman released his debut, “Whut? Thee Album,” in September 1992 and established himself as an important voice from Newark and Def Jam. One year later, “Tha Shiznit” appeared on a project closely associated with the rise of West Coast G-funk. The freestyle arrived shortly before Redman released “Muddy Waters Too” on December 24, 2024. The 32-track project continued the story of his 1996 album “Muddy Waters” and marked his first new studio album since “Mudface” in 2015.
