Video insights

@hiphopofthe90s's TikTok video "Big L over a DJ Premier beat was never going to miss 🔥 Although “The Enemy” appears on Big L’s 2000 album “The Big Picture,” the record had already been released years earlier. It first appeared in 1997 on a D.I.T.C. Records 12-inch alongside “Internationally Known.” Big L and Fat Joe were both members of Diggin’ in the Crates, the New York collective that also included Lord Finesse, Diamond D, O.C., Buckwild and Showbiz & A.G. DJ Premier handled the production, while one of the vocal samples came from O.C.’s “Time’s Up,” adding another D.I.T.C. connection to the record. Fat Joe later described “The Enemy” as one of his proudest songs. He remembered Big L as a younger brother within the crew and said that recording together naturally brought out a competitive side in both of them. DJ Premier returned to the record in 2021 for an episode of his “So Wassup?” series, where he explained how the production came together. “The Big Picture” later reached No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and earned Gold certification in the United States.
