Video insights

@hiphopofthe90s's TikTok video "Nas recorded that first verse in ONE take. Then asked if it sounded good 👀🔥 The “I don’t know how to start this…” moment on “N.Y. State of Mind” came while he was figuring out when to start rapping over DJ Premier’s beat. At D&D Studios, Premier counted him in from the control room, and Nas followed his cue. Nas later explained that he already had most of the lyrics written. He described the original rhyme as roughly 60 bars, then pieced that material together and added new lines as Premier worked on the track. Premier built the beat around the piano from Joe Chambers’ “Mind Rain.” He already had the drums and that opening chiming sound running. Nas was right there with him when they found the piano passage while going through records. On 1994’s Illmatic, “N.Y. State of Mind” follows “The Genesis” intro. Premier also produced “Memory Lane” and “Represent,” but “Represent” was actually the first beat he made for the album. When they revisited the concept for “N.Y. State of Mind Part II” on I Am… in 1999, Premier was hesitant. He later admitted he had been worried about living up to the original.
