Video insights
@dreasmith08's TikTok video "Before he was a television icon, Redd Foxx was simply John Elroy Sanford, a boy growing up alongside his older brother, Fred G. Sanford Jr. Born in St. Louis in 1922 and raised on Chicago’s South Side, John discovered his comedic instincts early while attending DuSable High School—long before he adopted his famous moniker. His path to mainstream stardom took decades of grit. Foxx honed his sharp, raw, and unapologetic style across the Black theater and nightclub circuits, ultimately breaking barriers for generations of Black comedians. Yet behind his sharp wit was an enduring family bond. Fred passed away in 1965, years before Redd achieved peak television fame. When Norman Lear adapted the British sitcom Steptoe and Son into Sanford and Son in 1972, Foxx insisted on naming his cantankerous, junk-dealing character Fred G. Sanford. The show went on to become one of the most celebrated Black-led sitcoms of the 1970s, turning the Sanford name into a cultural touchstone. This rare photograph captures two brothers long before the fame, the laughter, and the history. But its true resonance lies in what followed: when given the chance to command an audience of millions, Redd Foxx made sure his brother's memory shared the spotlight." has 371 views, 26 likes, 1 comments, 0 shares in the public metrics captured by this index.
