Sandra Bullock opened up about raising her two Black children while promoting her new film, Practical Magic 2, in an interview with Hoda Kotb on Today. Bullock adopted her son, Louis, in 2010 and her daughter, Laila, through foster care in 2015. She is now raising them as a single parent following the d*ath of her longtime partner, photographer Bryan Randall, from ALS in August 2023. Asked about her worries for her children as they grow older and more independent, Bullock said she remains “uber paranoid, and they will tell you.” “They’re like, ‘Mom, it’s gonna be fine,’” she said. “I’m like, ‘It’s not fine. It’s not fine outside.’” She pointed to what she called the energy floating around the country and the world right now, before turning to her children’s safety directly. “The color of their skin... they’re my babies, they’re my life, but no one knows that when they leave my house,” she said. “So that is always in the forefront of my mind.” Bullock added that she is learning to trust her children more as they get older, calling where they are now “extraordinary.” The comments echo conversations she has described having with her son for years. In a 2021 appearance on Red Table Talk, she recalled a moment when Louis, then six, put on a hoodie and she realized she needed to talk to him about how the world might perceive him. Her remarks drew a mixed reaction online, with some praising her candor about raising Black children as a white parent and others questioning the framing of her comments.
