In 2017, a teenager on a lunch break in his high school music room in rural Georgia, sang a Rihanna song for a phone camera, and changed the entire course of his life. The video went up on YouTube in November 2017. Willie Spence was a student at Coffee County High School in Douglas, Georgia, who had grown up singing in church and had no platform of any kind. The song was ‘Diamonds’, written by Sia and produced by Benny Blanco and StarGate for Rihanna’s 2012 album Unapologetic. There was no accompaniment, no microphone and no production — just a classroom, a group of classmates, and a voice that had no business being in that room. What makes this footage so compelling is how little there is to it. Spence doesn’t perform for the camera or play to the people around him; he simply opens his mouth and the sound arrives, rooted in R&B, soul and the gospel tradition he’d been raised in. The clip went viral and has since passed 22 million views. It led to an appearance on Steve Harvey’s show, and four years later he chose the same song for his American Idol audition — telling the judges he’d picked it again because it had helped him in the beginning and he’d never forget it. Lionel Richie could only repeat one word: unbelievable. Spence finished runner-up on season nineteen. He died in a car accident in Tennessee in October 2022, aged 23. Today, this footage stands as the purest kind of discovery — a kid in a classroom who needed nothing but his own voice, and the whole world finding out at once. — @g.o.a.t.songs TikTok
