It’s been 4 years of being a mom to a child with autism and I’ve felt so alone all this time. I have no friends who are mothers so that’s one things. But I also don’t know anyone who has a child with autism so that’s a whole things that I have to navigate alone. We have a support system and plenty of people who love her dearly, but no one truly understands what it’s like from a mother’s perspective having a child with autism. For the longest, I didn’t know how to cope with the emotions I feel around these. Even her dad’s experience with her and her autism is not the same as mine so that’s not there either unfortunately. (simply because he’s dad and I’m mom). But since I started having these intentional conversations with her, it’s helped me learn more about her communication style. It’s helped me appreciate the small things that I would overlook or worry about before. It’s helped me grow in my love and lesson my concern. That’s a blessing all on its own. I don’t think I can ever stop these conversations with her even if I choose to no longer share them one day.
