Video insights

@myphotojourney5's TikTok video "Why did English become the world's language? Many people point to the British Empire or the global influence of the United States, and both played a huge role. But there may be another reason. Unlike French, Spanish and many other major languages, English has no official language academy telling people what words, spellings or grammar they must use. French has the Académie Française. Spanish has the Real Academia Española. English is different. The Oxford English Dictionary and Merriam-Webster record how English is used, but they don't decide what English should be. If enough people start using a new word, phrase or expression, it can simply become part of the language. That flexibility has allowed English to absorb words from around the world and constantly adapt to new technologies, cultures and ideas. English didn't become global because it has no academy. But having no academy may be one reason it has been so good at staying global. #EnglishLanguage #LanguageHistory #Etymology #HistoryTok #LearnOnTikTok #English #Linguistics #BritishHistory #WordOrigins #LanguageFacts #AcademieFrancaise #SpanishLanguage #OxfordEnglishDictionary #DidYouKnow #History" has 40,943 views, 3,404 likes, 305 comments, 187 shares in the public metrics captured by this index.
