Video insights

@tatiana_nextstep's TikTok video "In Marseille, no metro or buses on Saturday. Paris deploys the army. Lyon bans all protests. On Saturday, October 24, French authorities are introducing the toughest measures since the cost-of-living protests began. Marseille — all demonstrations banned across the entire department. From 5 AM Saturday, all public transport suspended: metro, trams and buses, including routes to surrounding retail zones and between Aix-en-Provence and Marseille. A curfew applies to everyone in the city centre from 11 PM to 5 AM. Carrying helmets, gloves, goggles or fuel is prohibited. Paris — the army is being deployed. Soldiers from Operation Sentinel will guard strategic locations, freeing police for crowd control. Elite units GIGN, RAID and BRI are mobilised, along with helicopters, armoured vehicles and water cannons. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez will personally oversee the operation. Only the CGT union march is authorised: Bastille to Nation at 2 PM. The Yellow Vests' route to the Opéra is banned — they say they'll gather at Bastille from noon regardless. All Apple Stores in Paris will be closed. Metro stations Bastille, Reuilly-Diderot and Nation are expected to shut. Lyon — all protests banned citywide. Nice — gatherings banned in the centre from 8 AM to midnight, 650 officers deployed. Toulon, Chambéry, Le Mans, Caen — protests banned. Rouen, Grenoble, Le Havre — bans in city centres. Why so extreme? On October 17, between 550,000 and 800,000 people marched across France. By evening, riots broke out — around 3,000 shops looted or ransacked nationwide. Who's marching Saturday: Yellow Vests, high school and university students, local collectives. Around 340 actions planned: marches, roundabout blockades, protests at stations and fuel depots. They demand higher wages, frozen fuel prices, properly funded hospitals and schools, and an end to Parcoursup. What's next: Yellow Vests call for another mobilisation on October 31. Major unions — CGT, CFDT, FO — have announced a nationwide strike for November 5 The army in Paris and a transport shutdown in Marseille say everything: the government is bracing for worse. The real flashpoint is November 5.
