When Msituni the giraffe was born at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in 2022, something was seriously wrong with her legs. They bent improperly, making it difficult for her to stand, walk, keep up with her mother or even nurse normally. Without intervention, veterinarians feared the condition could permanently damage her joints and threaten her survival. The zoo’s veterinary team used detailed 3D imaging to study her legs, then reached out to specialists from Hanger Clinic, a company normally known for making braces and prosthetics for humans. Together, they molded Msituni’s legs and created custom carbon-graphite orthotic braces strong enough to support a growing giraffe while still allowing her to stand, lie down and move naturally. They even gave the braces a giraffe pattern. Within weeks, her legs were moving into the correct position. After roughly two months of treatment, the braces could be removed, and Msituni was eventually reunited with the herd. Today, she can run across the Safari Park alongside other giraffes, turning what could have been a fatal condition into an incredible example of human medicine being adapted to save wildlife.
