Video insights

@art_dailydose's TikTok video "Lithuanian photographer Andrius Burba captures animals from directly underneath for his project Underlook. With the animals standing on a glass surface and the camera positioned below, familiar bodies become surprising arrangements of paws, bellies, tails, and fur. Against a black background, some seem to float, while others look down at the lens as if they’re wondering what he’s doing there. The idea began after Burba saw photographs of cats resting on a glass table and became fascinated by their folded paws. In 2015, he brought his own setup to a cat show in Vilnius. What started with cats grew into a project featuring dogs, rabbits, horses, and other animals, each revealing something different from the same unexpected angle. The horse photographs required a much bigger production. Burba’s team dug a pit approximately 2.5 meters deep and built a sturdy glass platform above it, allowing him to photograph from below without leading the horses onto a high structure. He described working with a 40-person crew and an experienced horse handler. For the smaller subjects, the challenge is often less about engineering and more about cooperation. You can position the camera perfectly, but you can’t simply ask a rabbit to look down.
