Being able to tap in and out instead of buying individual tickets makes everyday train travel so much easier. Just make sure you keep enough money loaded on it. 3. Check the train type before jumping on. Local, rapid, express and other services can stop at different stations. Two trains using the same line don’t necessarily make the same stops. 4. Pay attention to station numbers. Many stations and lines use letters/colours and station numbers alongside the Japanese names. They’re SO helpful when you’re trying to work out whether you’re going in the right direction. 5. Give yourself extra time at big stations. Stations like Shinjuku can be huge. Don’t plan a super tight connection when you’re still learning your way around. And honestly? You will probably get on the wrong train at some point. We did.
