@theredarchivesyt's TikTok video "cryptid】FIJI MERMAID / フィジー人魚 There is a story about a mermaid caught near the Fiji Islands. In 1822, an American sea captain paid 6,000 dollars for it, using his own ship's money. In 1842, P. T. Barnum put it on show in New York. The posters showed beautiful mermaids. What people saw was the upper half of a monkey sewn onto the tail of a fish. Japanese fishermen made them to sell to sailors. The original disappeared, probably in one of the fires that destroyed Barnum's museums. One of these mermaids is still kept at Harvard's Peabody Museum. The night guards say it is not always facing the same way. Would you stand in front of that glass at night? Fiji Mermaid: the most famous hoax of the 19th century.
