Master Medical Codes_ Use CPT Books, Don't Memorize! If you think you have to memorize every definition and procedure in your CPT book, let me help you take some pressure off. The CPT book is full of definitions. If you’re trying to understand the difference between a fracture treatment, manipulation, external fixation, open treatment, or percutaneous skeletal fixation, look in the book. The definitions are there to help you. You also don’t have to memorize every list for selective catheterization. Your CPT book gives you definitions and lists for the different orders. Find the section, read the guidance, and use it to work through the question. The goal is not to remember every line in the book. The goal is to know how to use your books and where to find the information you need. That’s a huge part of coding and exam strategy. We’re not in grade school anymore, girlfriend. Use your books!
