@naughty_toons110's TikTok video "Why does everything smell so unbearable now? 😷 Facts: This is hyperosmia — a genuinely heightened sense of smell driven by rising estrogen and hCG in the first trimester. It's not imagination and it's not fussiness: coffee, cooking oil, the fridge, a partner's usual shampoo can all become intolerable overnight. Smell is also tightly linked to nausea, which is why morning sickness so often starts with an odor rather than a food. Things that tend to help: cold foods instead of hot ones since they release less aroma, keeping windows open, plain crackers before getting out of bed, small frequent snacks so your stomach is never empty, and yes — plenty of moms genuinely resort to a mask around the kitchen. The reassuring part is that it usually eases as the second trimester arrives. (Worth knowing: if you can't keep fluids down or are losing weight, that's one to call your provider about — it can be hyperemesis and it's treatable.)
