Análisis del vídeo

El vídeo de TikTok de @distilledscience “From an alga's eyespot to experimental human vision restoration 👁️ This vid is Part 3! Make sure to check out Part 1 &3 if you missed them. The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine honors Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel. Here's the clinical context behind the story. The neural retina is part of the central nervous system and develops from an outgrowth of the forebrain. Deep-brain light delivery commonly uses implants, but experimental implant-free approaches have been demonstrated in mice. Other retinal neurons can survive photoreceptor loss, but surviving wiring needn't be normal or completely intact. Sahel, Roska and colleagues PUBLISHED the patient report in 2021; that isn't the injection date. The man was 58 and had been diagnosed forty years earlier, which does not mean forty years of total blindness. Before treatment he retained light perception. A viral vector delivered the gene for ChrimsonR, an engineered protein derived from Chlamydomonas noctigama, to retinal ganglion cells. Training started about 4½ months after the injection. Visual improvements were reported seven months after training began. Sahel described the crosswalk-stripe observation; formal tests measured locating, touching and counting objects. Those gains required the treated eye AND goggles: without goggles, he couldn't perform those tasks. This paper reported partial recovery in one patient, not normal sight or a general cure for blindness. Sources: Sahel et al.
