Análisis del vídeo

El vídeo de TikTok de @distilledscience “Fifteen years, a frog egg and a former schoolteacher fell... into science? 🤔 On October 5, 2026, Peter Hegemann, Georg Nagel and Karl Deisseroth received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. The 12 million SEK prize is shared equally: four million each. The alga helped inspire the discoveries, but unfortunately didn't qualify as a laureate. A little more detail to add required scientific nuance to everything I said here: the model alga is Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, found in freshwater and soil. Green pond water can contain many species. Its two “tails” are flagella; its eyespot senses light direction rather than forming images. Cell size varies; the Nobel illustration uses about 15 micrometres. Algae can swim towards OR away from light, depending on conditions; the dish example shows positive phototaxis. The delay below 50 microseconds comes from Holland et al. (1996). That's the start of an electrical current, not the time to turn or swim. The speed suggested a closely coupled sensor and channel; it didn't alone prove they were one protein. In our rods and cones, the chemical relay ultimately CLOSES ion channels. Light-driven microbial pumps were already known; directly light-gated channels were the breakthrough here. Hegemann's “one year became fifteen” is his recollection of the long photoreceptor search, which began before the 1990s hypothesis. The database was a gene-sequence catalogue, not a completed genome. Suneel Kateriya identified candidate sequences in his group in 2001; Spudich's and Takahashi's groups also identified the genes independently. Nagel and colleagues, including Ernst Bamberg, tested them in unfertilized Xenopus egg cells, using RNA instructions for these membrane proteins. Sources: Holland et al.
