We took a little trip to Vermont to visit someone very special. Ethan Hubbard, renowned photographer / author, and my father’s oldest, closest friend. Ethan and my dad met in 1955, when they were just 14. Two young boys with a lifetime ahead of them. Ethan was there for my birth in 1984… Yeah, different times. We’ve remained really close over the years. He lives on a picturesque hill in the most “Vermont” of locations. We arrived just after peak foliage, but the colors were still popping. I’m thinking we’ll make Ethan visits a regular thing. Stella and Mabel were right at home (minus the guinea fowl incident). I want the world to know about Ethan’s photography. For most of his life he’s traveled the globe, curiously documenting people through black and white, natural-light photography. With an emphasis on character, hard work, and humor, he’s beautifully captured the daily lives of humans, rather than staged glamor. He describes his work as focusing on “curiosities, anachronisms, misfits, innocents, and angels”. He’s always been drawn to those who exist outside of modern culture. From salt of the earth people living in the most rural parts of Vermont, to indigenous villages in 50+ countries, Ethan has brought an intimate view of real humanity to life, with high-contrast photography as his medium. He’s incredibly humble about his work, but I’ll sing his praises all day. Ethan has released 19 books. He’s not a big Internet guy (aside from watching Led Zeppelin concerts on YouTube), but Google “Ethan Hubbard photography” to see some of his work.
