A peanut (Arachis hypogaea) is an edible seed that grows inside a pod. Even though it is called a "nut", it is actually a legume belonging to the pea and bean family (Fabaceae). [1, 2, 3, 4] ## Key Facts * Growth: The plant flowers above the ground, then sends down a stalk-like structure called a "peg" that buries the fertilized ovules. The pods mature entirely underground. [3, 5] * Origin: They are native to South America and were spread globally through trade and exploration. [3, 6] * Common Names: They are also called groundnuts, goobers, monkey nuts, or earthnuts. [4, 5, 6] * Uses: Peanuts are eaten roasted or salted, crushed into [peanut butter](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peanut), pressed for [peanut oil](https://www.britannica.com/plant/peanut), or used in various global cuisines and candies. [7, 8] * Nutrition: They are rich in plant protein, healthy fats, fiber, and vitamins, though they can trigger severe, potentially fatal allergic reactions in some people.
