CUSTOMS SEIZES 560KG OF SUSPECTED CANNABIS WORTH GH¢11.2 MILLION AT TORVE, AFLAO The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a massive consignment of suspected cannabis weighing 560.4 kilograms, with an estimated street value of GH¢11.2 million, at Torve, near Akatsi in the Volta Region. The operation was conducted by the Aflao Sector Command’s Preventive Monitoring Unit (PMU) on October 15, 2026, at approximately 9:35 p.m., following intelligence about a suspicious black Lexus vehicle believed to be transporting illicit substances. According to Customs, the driver attempted to escape but abandoned the vehicle after it reportedly developed a mechanical fault. A subsequent search uncovered 1,065 compressed parcels of suspected cannabis concealed in the vehicle. Officers also retrieved a Ghana Card bearing the name Kunuhor Gidsway, while preliminary findings indicated that the vehicle was carrying falsified registration plates. The seizure was jointly examined by officers from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), Defence Intelligence, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and National Security. The seized substances and vehicle have since been handed over to NACOC for further investigation, with laboratory testing expected to confirm the nature of the suspected drugs. Customs has recommended efforts to trace and apprehend the fleeing suspect, verify the identity on the retrieved Ghana Card through the National Identification Authority, and strengthen intelligence gathering to prevent similar trafficking attempts. The Sector Commander for Aflao Collection, Emmanuel Reginald Duh, described the operation as a significant disruption to the illegal drug trade in the region.
