Protecting roads, parking lots, property, and homes requires both coastal armoring and sand replenishment. Look at Baja and less-developed stretches of Mexico — you’ll often see massive, healthy beaches. Why? Their arroyos, creeks, and rivers still flow relatively naturally and deliver sediment to the coast, continuously rebuilding the shoreline. In Southern California and Orange County, it’s the opposite. Millions of homes, roads, culverts, dams, sidewalks, golf courses, and other development upstream have locked up the land. That sediment never reaches the beach. The result: chronic sand starvation and accelerating coastal damage, especially during big swells and storms. If coastal cities were able to place millions of cubic yards of sand on the beaches while also using armoring (riprap, seawalls, etc.) where needed, we would have far better protection and wider beaches for the long term. Natural systems need sediment. When we cut that supply off, we have to replace it artificially — and we need to do both protection and nourishment together.
